Lithium is a valuable trace element that occurs naturally in the form of salt. It belongs to the same family of alkali metals as potassium and sodium - therefore it also occurs in nature in analogous compounds. Medical applications of this valuable mineral go back to the nineteenth century, when it was used, among others in relieving depression, and is now also available as a dietary supplement in the form of an organic salt - lithium orotate.
Lithium Aliness is obtained from natural brine springs and from igneous rocks. The two main sources of lithium in the world are Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and the Andes salt desert in Chile.
What are the forms of lithium?
Lithium, like many other minerals, in order to be available to the body, requires an antioxidant that functions as a carrier. It cannot be absorbed in a metallic form, therefore it is present in the form of appropriate salts in medicines and dietary supplements. The form used in pharmacy is lithium carbonate, while in dietary supplements lithium is available in the form of safer, organic salts - lithium asparagine and lithium orotate.
Oroton vs. aspartate. Why lithium orotate?
Due to the lower lithium content compared to carbonate, lithium aspartate and orotate are safer and available over the counter. Aspartate, however, is considered an excitotoxin, i.e. a substance that binds to nerve cell receptors and can cause their excessive, harmful health stimulation. Excitotoxins can cause headaches, brain edema, eye inflammation, and problems with the vascular system and the central nervous system in sensitive individuals. Lithium in the form of orotate is therefore especially recommended for people who are sensitive to another popular excitotoxin - monosodium glutamate (MSG) and have experienced
